Trading derivative products on Indian exchanges (NSE, BSE, MCX) requires precise awareness of friction costs. Effective October 1, 2024, the Ministry of Finance implemented revised Securities Transaction Tax (STT) slabs across equity derivatives:
| Regulatory Charge | Pre-Oct 2024 Rate | Revised 2024-2025 Slabs | Applicability & Side |
|---|---|---|---|
| STT on Futures | 0.0125% | 0.02% (200 per crore) | Sell side only (Turnover = Lots × Qty × Price) |
| STT on Options Premium | 0.0625% | 0.10% (1,000 per crore) | Sell side only on premium value |
| Exchange Txn Charges | NSE / BSE Slabs | Uniform Exchange Turnover | Both Buy and Sell sides |
| SEBI Turnover Fee | ₹10 / crore | ₹10 per crore (0.0001%) | Both sides of trade |
| GST | 18.00% | 18.00% on Fees | Calculated on Brokerage + Exch + SEBI |
Reconciliation on Contract Notes
Discount brokers in India (Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, Upstox) charge a flat fee of ₹20 or 0.03% (whichever is lower) per executed order. However, statutory government duties often dwarf the initial ₹20 brokerage on high turnover index futures.
