How to Calculate Position Size
Position sizing is the foundation of risk management in trading. It determines exactly how many shares or contracts you should buy or sell to ensure that if your stop loss is hit, you only lose a predetermined percentage of your account.
The Mathematical Formula
Worked Calculation Example
If you have a ₹1,00,000 account and want to risk 1% per trade, your maximum risk amount is ₹1,000.
If you buy a stock at ₹1,400 with a stop loss at ₹1,350, your risk per share is ₹50.
Therefore, your position size should be: ₹1,000 ÷ ₹50 = 20 shares.
Note: This calculator rounds down to the nearest whole share to ensure you never exceed your maximum risk.
