What is Securities Transaction Tax (STT)?
Securities Transaction Tax (STT) is a direct financial turnover tax levied by the Government of India on transactions involving equity shares, mutual funds, and derivative contracts.
Genesis & Collection Mechanism
Introduced in the Union Budget 2004 by the Ministry of Finance, STT was engineered to eliminate widespread capital gains tax evasion by replacing subjective self-reporting with an automated withholding tax levied directly at source.
The Clearing Corporation (NSE Clearing Limited or ICCL) computes and withholds the exact STT obligation on every executed trade before crediting or debiting settlement funds, ensuring 100% statutory compliance with zero counterparty leakage.
Income Tax Act Deductibility
Whether you can deduct STT depends strictly on how your trading income is classified under the Indian Income Tax Act:
- Business Income (F&O / Day Traders): Under Section 36(1)(xv), STT paid is fully allowable as an operational business expense against gross business trading revenue!
- Capital Gains (Investors - STCG/LTCG): Under Section 48, STT is NOT deductible either from sale consideration or as cost of improvement.
assignment_turned_in Current STT Rates Schedule Summary

- Options (Index & Stock): 0.1% on Sell side premium value.
- Note on Rounding: STT is always rounded off to the nearest integer Rupee as per Section 288B of the Indian Income Tax Act regulations.
