Hidden Fees in "Zero Commission" US Trading

Even if your broker offers $0 commission trades, transactions remain subject to mandatory statutory SEC Section 31 fees and FINRA Trading Activity Fees (TAF).

account_balance Government & Self-Regulatory Mandates

SEC Fee (Section 31)

Sell Side Only

Charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission to recover costs of government supervision. Currently ~$27.80 per $1,000,000 of principal (subject to periodic federal recalculation). Applied strictly when you sell.

FINRA TAF (Trading Activity Fee)

Sell Side Only

Trading Activity Fee charged by FINRA to fund member market surveillance. It is $0.000166 per share, capped at $8.30 per trade. Applied strictly on sell executions.

Payment for Order Flow (PFOF) Note

Implicit Drag

Zero-commission brokers often route retail orders to internal wholesale market makers (Citadel, Virtu, Jane Street) rather than public exchanges, resulting in minor price improvement or subtle sub-penny fill slippage.

functions Algorithmic Formulations & Calculation Model

// Standard US Equity Profit Formula Model
Gross Profit = (Sell Price - Buy Price) * Number of Shares
Total Buy Value = Buy Price * Number of Shares
Total Sell Value = Sell Price * Number of Shares
SEC Fee = (Total Sell Value / 1,000,000) * 27.80
FINRA TAF = MIN(Number of Shares * 0.000166, 8.30)
Total Regulatory Fees = SEC Fee + FINRA TAF + Commissions
Net Profit = Gross Profit - Total Regulatory Fees
ROI % = (Net Profit / Total Buy Value) * 100

Worked Numerical Example (AAPL Scenario)

100 shares of AAPL @ $150.00 Buy ($15,000.00) sold @ $165.00 ($16,500.00):

Gross Profit: $1,500.00 SEC Fee: $0.4587 FINRA TAF: $0.0166 Total Fees: $0.4753 (~$0.48)
Net Profit = $1,500.00 - $0.48 = +$1,499.52 (+10.00% Net ROI).

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about US exchange transaction mechanics, government fees, and execution efficiency.

Why do regulatory fees only apply on the sell side? expand_more
Under Section 31 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and FINRA By-Laws Schedule A, transactions are assessed transaction recovery fees only when securities are sold or disposed of. Regulatory bodies assess brokerages based on aggregate sales volume in dollars and shares. Brokerages pass this direct operational charge straight through to the selling client on the confirmation statement.
How does Payment for Order Flow (PFOF) affect my fill execution in zero-commission brokers? expand_more
When you enter an equity order with a commission-free broker, they route non-directed orders to market-making firms (such as Citadel Securities, Virtu Americas, or Two Sigma). The market maker pays the brokerage a fraction of a cent per share to trade against retail flow. While Rule 606 requires quarterly disclosure and SEC Rule 605 requires execution quality reporting, retail fills may occasionally receive slightly wider spreads or fewer price-improvement cents compared to direct market access (DMA).
What is the maximum fee FINRA can charge per trade under the TAF rule? expand_more
Under FINRA Schedule A Section 1, the Trading Activity Fee (TAF) on covered equity securities is currently $0.000166 per share, with a maximum cap of $8.30 per trade. Regardless of whether you sell 50,000 shares or 500,000 shares in a single trade execution ticket, the FINRA TAF component cannot exceed $8.30.
Does this calculator account for short selling and borrow fee interest? expand_more
This module models standard long equity buy-and-sell cycles. For short positions, SEC and FINRA fees apply at the initial opening leg (which is a sell to open transaction), and overnight hard-to-borrow (HTB) annual interest rates apply while holding the short balance. You can utilize the dedicated CalcTrading Short Borrow & Margin Engine for multi-day borrow rates.
Are SEC fees tax-deductible against capital gains? expand_more
Yes. In US tax accounting (IRS Form 8949 / Schedule D), SEC transaction fees, FINRA TAF, and broker commissions reduce the gross sales proceeds (or increase cost basis). Your reported net capital gain or loss naturally incorporates these friction reductions, lowering your taxable realized net gain.
