Understanding US Options Trading Costs & Multipliers
Unlike equity share trading which is often commission-free in the US, options trading typically incurs a per-contract fee plus exchange clearing fees across a 100-share contract multiplier.
The Multiplier Rule
In the US market, 1 standard equity or ETF option contract represents exactly 100 shares of the underlying stock. This means a quoted premium of $2.50 actually costs you $250.00 per contract to purchase. When calculating exits, every 1-cent move in premium equals a $1.00 net change per contract.
Commission and Fee Drag
Total commission drag must factor both the opening order and the subsequent closing or exercise transaction. For 10 contracts at $0.65 per contract, opening costs $6.50 and closing costs another $6.50, totaling $13.00 in frictionless breakeven hurdle.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the 100-share multiplier affect my total risk exposure? expand_more
When buying options (Long Calls or Long Puts), your maximum capital at risk is strictly limited to the total debit premium paid plus commissions. For example, buying 10 contracts at a $2.50 quoted premium creates an upfront outlay of $2,500.00. Regardless of whether the underlying stock drops to $0.00, your maximum possible loss is capped at this exact initial purchase amount.
Can I close an options contract before expiration to lock in profit? expand_more
Yes. Over 85% of options traders close their positions prior to expiration by executing a "Sell to Close" order. You do not need to wait for contract settlement or exercise shares; as long as the market is open, you can liquidate the option to lock in current market value and intrinsic/extrinsic gains.
How are US options taxed for individual traders (Section 1256 vs ordinary gains)? expand_more
Standard single-stock equity options (e.g., AAPL, NVDA) are treated as short-term capital gains if held for less than one year. Broad-market index options (such as SPX, NDX, or RUT) qualify for favorable Section 1256 tax treatment, where profits are automatically taxed at 60% long-term and 40% short-term capital gains rates regardless of holding period duration.
How does round-trip commission drag impact short-term options breakeven? expand_more
Broker commissions apply to both opening and closing transactions. For example, at $0.65 per contract leg, 10 contracts incur $6.50 to open and $6.50 to close ($13.00 total). This round-trip friction adds $0.013 per share to your breakeven exit target before turning a net profit.
