How to Calculate Your Stop Loss
A stop-loss order defines the exact price invalidation level where a trading setup is mathematically disproven, capping capital loss and preserving trading psychology.
The Mathematical Formula
verified Worked Verification Example
If you execute a long order for 100 shares of HDFC Bank at ₹1,600.00:
- You establish a total portfolio risk budget of ₹2,000.00 on this setup.
- Your mathematical risk per share equals:
₹2,000 ÷ 100 = ₹20.00 per share. - Because you hold a Long Position, you subtract the risk
spread from your fill price:
₹1,600 - ₹20 = ₹1,580.00.
