What is Margin in Trading?
Margin is the collateral deposited with a broker or exchange to cover credit and price volatility risk associated with holding leveraged derivatives and intraday positions.
The Margin Formula
Worked Calculation Example
If you want to buy 100 shares of a stock priced at ₹500 using 5x leverage:
Your total trade value is ₹50,000.
Because you have 5x leverage, you only need to provide 1/5th (20%) of the total value.
Margin Required = ₹50,000 ÷ 5 = ₹10,000.
