Taxes & Charges in Indian Delivery Equity

Delivery equity trades in India incur Securities Transaction Tax (STT), Depository Participant (DP) charges, exchange turnover fees, SEBI turnover charges, and state stamp duty.

Charges Breakdown

  • check_circle
Brokerage: Often ₹0 at discount brokers, or up to 0.1% at full-service brokers.
  • check_circle
STT (Securities Transaction Tax): 0.1% applied on BOTH buy and sell turnover. This is the biggest tax component.
  • check_circle
DP Charges: Charged by the depository (CDSL/NSDL) and the broker when shares are debited (sold) from your Demat account. Generally a flat fee of ₹13.5 to ₹15.93 + GST per scrip per day.
  • check_circle
Exchange Transaction Charges: Around 0.00345% on NSE.
  • check_circle
GST: 18% on (Brokerage + Exchange Charges + DP Charges + SEBI).
  • check_circle
Stamp Duty: 0.015% applied only on the buy side.

Why STT is Higher on Delivery vs Intraday

In intraday trades, STT is only 0.025% on the sell side. However, for delivery trades, the government levies 0.1% on BOTH buy and sell turnover (a combined 0.2% round trip). On a ₹10,00,000 delivery turnover, this represents ₹1,000 in STT alone vs only ₹125 in intraday.

Depository Participant (DP) Charge Mechanics

DP charges are independent of order quantity. Selling 1 share of Infosys or 10,000 shares of Infosys on the same trading day incurs the exact same flat fee (₹13.50 to ₹15.93 + GST). However, selling shares of two different companies (e.g. INFY and TCS) generates two separate DP debit charges.
